Last year Edmund Curtis and I cut together an in-depth BTS video for a series of Grolsch Idents we were filming. We entered it into the Fstoppers BTS video contest and made it into the top twelve. It has now been announced that we have come 2nd! (Bagging us a nice amount of camera gear!)

Personally the real prize was having our work seen by the judging panel. The four judges Stacy Pearsall, Scott Kelby, Vincent Laforet and Chase Jarvis. Though Chase didn’t nominate us for his top three videos it feels great to know that he has watched our BTS video. Especially as he was one of first photographers to kick off the whole BTS video scene and open the doors to what was once a very closed off industry.

I was really chuffed to see that Vincent Laforet had nominated us as his first choice. Not only being the sole cinematographer in the judging panel but the person at the forefront of the DSLR movement.

A massive thanks to Lee and Partrick from Fstoppers for holding this contest. It has been inspiring watching everyones BTS video entries. Better start thinking for next years contest!

How Far Can You Crop A 5Dmrk2 Image?

Last year I shot the art work for FIN’s debut album.  Fin mentioned that they were going to crop into the image but I was taken back when I saw the final image.  I though he wasn’t being serious, but I was wrong.  Have a look for yourself…

Shot on the Canon 5D mrk 2 the image holds it quality even when heavily cropped.  I used the 24mm 1.4 mrk 1 lens.  The 24mm mrk 2 is a much stronger lens but I couldn’t get ahold of one in time for the shoot.  Still pretty damn impressed with the quality.

After the success of ‘Strange Fruit’ Edmund Curtis and I have joined forces to create Curtis and Kar.

Two DOP’s working on the same set!?  Who would have thought it possible.  But it works.

Collaboration is one of the greatest creative tools.

When director @Mattsnyman says he’s gonna make a car out of cardboard, well…see for yourself.

These are photos from the Chevrolet commercial we shot the other weekend.

The ad, shot on the Red using Kino Flos, Micro Flos (for the cars interior), tonnes of Dedo lamps and one massive HMI Arrisun light, is currently in post production and will be out in the next few weeks.

A few weeks back we were in France shooting shawls for Trehearne and Brar and for Vogue (UK).  These are not your everyday shawls, these are genuine Kashmir shawls, hand woven from authentic Pashmina cashmere.  They take months to make and retail from £400 – £6,500. (Yes I’m thinking the same, thats the price of the contents of my camera bag!).

I had a pair of Bowen lights with me but my plan was to utilise the brightest light of all, the Sun.  Armed with an array of reflectors I was able to bounce and defuse the sunlight to suit the photo.  We set up in an outdoor area that was surrounded by walls, which provided us with a shaded area where we could handle the shawls as they were sensitive to prolonged exposure to sunlight.  There we were able to bounce the sunlight in to our work area.

We shot a number of different shawls out in France, with no more than 4 shawls in each photo. For the tech geeks reading this we used, my favourite, the Canon 5D MrkII and the 50mm 1.2L. For the reflectors we used Lastolite.

Back in London we had around 170 shawls left to photograph and 8 pages in the brochure to fit them in.  We stacked them on top of each other, about 23 shawls to each pile.  Sounds simple enough but simple was far from how it played out.  Imagine dealing with 23 very delicate shawls, each carefully ironed, steamed, neatly folded then balanced on one another.  Which, if left for more than a few minutes would slowly flatten the ones at the bottom of the pile.  Then as the stack got taller it would lean a bit the left and then to the right and when you’ve finally got it right it would collapse and you have to go back to the beginning. Two of the photos that went to print were taken seconds before the whole stack came falling down.

We found propping a 2L bottle of water behind the stack helped to hold it up. :)
